Leon Payne Visits the Alba Library
On Saturday, October 12, the Alba Public Library and Museum was honored to receive a guitar, on-stage western wear, sheet music and other memorabilia belonging to the late Leon Payne, singer and song writer. Leon Payne Jr. and his wife, Pamela, loaned the items to the library.
Leon Sr. a native of Alba, was known as “The Blind Troubador”, as he wrote and performed numerous hit C&W songs. Leon recorded for Bluebird, Capitol, and Decca. Among his hits were: “I Love You Because”, “Lost Highway”, “Cry-Baby Heart”, I’m a Lone Wolf”, “Fools Rush In”, “Polk Salad” and dozens of others. Leon’s songs were recorded by Carl Smith, Charlie Walker, George Jones, Hank Snow, Elvis Presley, Elvis Costello, and dozens of others. Leon performed with such well known groups as Bob Wills Texas Playboys, Lone Star Buddies, and the Cowboy Ramblers. Leon was a frequent performer on the Big D Jamboree, the Lousiana Hay Ride, and the Grand Ole Opry.
